Understanding Public Debt: A Libertarian View
When governments spend more money than they bring in, they create something called public debt. Just like when a person spends more than they earn and has to borrow money, governments borrow too. But is this a good idea? Feena Bonoan, who’s running for U.S. Senate in Florida, doesn’t think so, and here’s why.
What’s Wrong with Public Debt?
Feena Bonoan believes that too much public debt is bad for several reasons:
- It’s like a credit card: Imagine if every month you spent more than you made and put the extra on a credit card. Soon, you’d owe a lot of money! That’s what happens when our government keeps borrowing.
- Future generations pay: When the government borrows money, who do you think has to pay it back? We do! Not just us, but our kids and even our grandkids will have to pay for this debt.
- It can lead to less freedom: The more the government owes, the more it might need to raise taxes to pay that debt. This means less money in everyone’s pockets and less freedom to spend on what matters to us.
Libertarian Solutions
Libertarians like Feena Bonoan prefer a government that doesn’t spend more than it has. Here’s what she supports:
- Spending cuts: She believes the government should cut back on spending, just like families do when they need to save money.
- Smaller government: A smaller government means less spending, which means less need for debt.
- Personal freedom: With less public debt, the government won’t need to raise taxes, leaving more money in people’s pockets and giving them more freedom to make their own choices.
Why It Matters
Feena Bonoan wants everyone to have the chance to live in a country that’s not buried under debt. This way, everyone can enjoy more freedom and better opportunities without the burden of paying off huge amounts of borrowed money.
